Splintered Nation

Following great military victories under King David, God gave Israel a rest from their enemies on every side. Solomon freely built a magnificent Temple and the nation was extremely prosperous, with peaceful borders. Unfortunately, the people and their leaders moved further from God. They compromised in their worship and alliances. We know what happened next - the nation literally split (975BC), with 10 tribes in the No. (Israel) and 2 in the So. (Judah).

"Remember what the apostles of our Christ foretold. 'In the last times there will be scoffers who will follow their own ungodly desires.' They will divide you if you follow mere natural instincts and do not have the Spirit. Build yourselves up in your most holy faith and pray in the Holy Spirit, keeping yourselves in God’s love as you wait for the mercy of our Lord to bring you to eternal life. Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy..."                  JUDE 1: 17-23

Was this split necessary? God allowed it, but He also allowed them to opt for mortal kings to take His place - kings who ended up dominating them. He warned against it but allowed it due to their obstinance. What is being allowed because of our sins? What are WE willfully pursuing or apathetically accepting that goes against His righteous counsel? Aren't we seeing a split in our nation as well? What is the remedy? Be merciful to those who doubt; save others by snatching them from the fire; to others show mercy.
